We want Allende Books to be a good place for the traveler to find basic information about the Baja, La Paz and help to delve deeper into the roots of Mexican culture, and then to take back home a piece of the Baja warmth with you.
Thats where Perla comes in to spice up the situation! We are proud to introduce you to the amaizing heritage of the bookstore’s official greeter.
Throughout the ages. Ancient clay
representations bear witness to th
e fact that the mexican bald dog has remained virtually unchanged for centuries. Modern day Xolos bear a striking resemblance to these primative artifacts.
The name Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced show-low-etz-queent-lee) is derived from the name of the Aztec Indian god
Xolotl and Itzcuintli, the Aztec word for dog. The Xolo held a place of special religious significance for many ancient cultures. Clay and ceramic effigies of Xolos date back over
3000 years and have been discovered in the tombs of the Toltec, Aztec, Mayan, Zapoteca
, andColima Indians. The famous pottery dogs of Colima provide
evidence of the intricate bond which has existed between man and Xolo for centuries. All of these relics give testimony to the civilizations’ fondness for these wonderful dogs. They are truly a living link to the glory of these primitive cultures.
The Xolo’s reputation as a healer persists to this day. It is not at all uncommon to find Xolos put to use in remote Mexican and Central American villages. Believed to ward off and cure numerous ailments including rheumatism, asthma, toothache and insomnia, undoubtedly the gentle warmth of the Xolo skin does have a palliative effect on the sufferer.
Esteemed as guards and protectors, Xolos were believed to safeguard the home from evil spirits as well as intruders. In ancient times Xolos were often sacrificed and buried with their masters in order to guide the soul on its joumey to the underworld.
Perla, is barely four months old, though with her ferocious appereance and noble heritage, she is no guard dog. She is incredibly eager to meet new friends and give that warm welcome that the guests to our little bookstore deserve.
So, another reason to visit us!
